Free Agent Signings
Boston has locked up their first three picks in the 2024 Draft, signing Hannah Bilka, Daniela Pejšová and Sydney Bard to SPA’s. They have also extended the contracts for Lexie Adzija, Sophie Shirley, Hannah Brandt, Emily Brown and Sidney Morin, who were all on the team last season. The Fleet also tested the free agent market, signing former Minnesota defender Emma Greco to a one-year deal.
Players To Watch
-
Hillary Knight
After finishing her four years at the University of Wisconsin, Knight played in the CWHL and NWHL and represented Team USA in three Olympic games before landing in Boston last season. Head Coach Courtney Birchard-Kessel will look to her for experience and leadership in the dressing room and to mentor the younger players. At 35 years old, Knight won’t be expected to score at the rate she did earlier in her career, but the veteran forward can still put the puck in the net and will be looking to build on her six tallies from a year ago.
-
Aerin Frenkel
Frenkel was the clear No.1 last season starting 18 regular-season games and all 8 playoff games. The Fleet will once again lean heavily on Frankel and count on her to log a lot of minutes. Over the course of five seasons at Northeastern University and one with Boston, Frankel has never had a goals-against-average above 2.00.
-
Hannah Bilka
It will be interesting to see if Fleet’s first-round pick will be able to make an immediate impact, especially in the offensive zone. Bilka is coming off a solid season at Ohio State scoring 22 goals in 39 games. Fleet General Manager Danielle Marmer was clearly looking to add some scoring in this year’s draft and Bilka will be primed to fill that role.
Keys to Success
It is no secret that Boston’s biggest concern last season was lack of scoring. Despite scoring a league-low 50 goals, they were still only one game away from being Walter Cup Champions. If the Fleet can get more scoring in 2025 they will once again be competing for a championship.
Rookie Hannah Bilka will help, but the Fleet will also need some of their existing players to generate more offence. Forwards Jamie-Lee Rattray and Hannah Brandt were both prolific goal scorers in the NCAA and prime candidates to give the Fleet a boost offensively.
Boston added defenders Daniela Pejšová, Sydney Bard and Hadley Harmetz to bolster an already strong group. Coach Kessel will have some tough decisions to make before the season starts but she already has a strong core to build on from last season.
