Free Agent Signings
New York heads into the 2025 season with most of its top players still under contract. With seven forwards and four defenders returning, the Sirens have their core intact, but still have a lot of work to do to solidify their roster going into training camp. At the end of the 2024 season, New York didn’t have any goaltenders under contract, so signing Abigail Levy and Corinne Schroeder to one- and two-year extensions, respectively, was their top offseason priority. So far, New York has not picked up any free agents during the offseason but has locked up draftees Kayle Osborne and Maja Nylén Persson for three years and Noora Tulus to a two-year deal. Despite their lack of moves, the Sirens have invited former Montreal defender Madison Bizal and undrafted defender Chayla Edwards to attend training camp. With seven roster spots left to fill, GM Pascal Daoust still has some decisions to make before the puck drops on the new season.
Players To Watch
-
Alex Carpenter
The Sirens’ top scorer last season has a wealth of experience having represented Team USA in nine World Championships and two Olympic games, racking up a gold or silver medal in each tournament. Carpenter has proven she can produce points at the NCAA, International and professional levels and will have to have a strong season if New York wants to lift itself out of the basement.
-
Ella Shelton
The fourth-overall pick in the first PWHL Draft was the Sirens’ best defender last season and scored the franchise’s first ever goal. Like Carpenter, Shelton has found success at every level she has played at winning an NCAA National Championship, three World Championships and an Olympic gold medal at the 2022 Beijing games. New York will need Shelton’s leadership and experience in big games if she is going to add a Walter Cup trophy to her playing resume.
-
Sarah Fillier
The 2024 first-overall pick should make an immediate impact for the Sirens and provide them with a scorer who can jump right into a top-six forward position. Fillier comes to New York after finishing an incredible collegiate career at Princeton tallying 194 points in 120 games over the course of four seasons. At just 24 years old, Fillier has already experienced tremendous success at the international level, winning three World Championships and an Olympic gold medal playing for Canada.
Keys to Success
After finishing last place and missing the playoffs in the inaugural PWHL season, the Sirens will have their work cut out for them if they want to improve in the standings.
Their No.1 priority is improving their defence after giving up a league high 67 goals and ending the season with a minus-14 goal differential. Things could have been worse had it not been for the solid play of goaltender Corrine Schroeder, who kept them in several games that they were heavily outplayed.
In addition to improving their defensive woes, New York needs to build a better culture in the dressing room. Starting at the top, the Sirens made a coaching change brining in Colgate University’s Greg Fargo to replace Howie Draper. Fargo led Colgate to five NCAA tournaments, two Frozen Fours, and an NCAA Championship in 2017-18 and leaves as the program’s winningest coach with a 255–147–34 record. He will have some familiar faces in his lineup with New York after the team drafted Colgate players Allyson Simpson and Kayle Osborne who will join Raiders’ alumni Jessie Eldridge and Olivia Zafuto. “The Colgate Connection” will have familiarity with Fargo and his systems and that connection will hopefully help build a stronger team culture.
