Free Agent Signings
Toronto opened free agency with a splash signing forward Daryl Watts to a two-year contract. Watts was the top offensive free agent available this year after leading Ottawa in scoring in 2024 with 17 points in 24 games, including 10 goals. Staying close to home, they re-signed forward Hannah Miller to a one-year extension. Miller was Toronto’s fourth leading scorer in 2024 and a core member of the inaugural team. Toronto continued to build their forward group by adding free agent Emma Woods. Woods, who was a member of the Toronto Six for three seasons before being drafted and playing for New York last year.
Players To Watch
-
Natalie Spooner
As the league’s top offensive player in 2024, her ability to create scoring chances and finish plays will be critical. The Billie Jean King MVP winner will have to have another big season if Toronto wants to build on their inaugural campaign.
-
Julia Gosling
The rookie’s performance will be closely watched as she looks to make an immediate impact and adapt to the league’s pace. Gosling played her college ice hockey at St. Lawrence University, where she captained the team in her senior year.
-
Kristen Campbell
Toronto had the best goaltending in the PWHL last season, and Campbell was a big part of that posting a 16-6-0 record with three shutouts and a 1.99 goals-against average. The PWHL Goaltender of the Year will be leaned on heavily again this season.
Keys to Success
Toronto will be looking to build on its regular-season success from a year ago and make a longer playoff run. The Scepters finished first overall in the regular-season but lost their first playoff series against Minnesota after winning the first two games.
With several free agent signings and a strong draft class, Toronto has all the pieces to have another strong regular season and make it further in the playoffs. In addition to Spooner, Toronto looks to Sarah Nurse to contribute offensively. Nurse managed almost a point per game in 2024 and has the potential to be one of the top scorers in the league.
The coaching staff hopes draft pick Izzy Daniel will also contribute to the scoresheet having put up huge numbers at Cornell University on route to winning the Patty Kazmaier Award as the best female player in college hockey. Defensively, Toronto will once again depend on their top pairing of Jocelyne Larocque and Renata Fast to shut down the oppositions’ top lines.
