Free Agent Signings
The Charge focused on re-signing several key players and locking up their 2024 draft picks during the off-season. Second-overall pick Danielle Serdachny, third-round pick Gwyneth Philips and sixth-round pick Anna Meixner have all signed contracts. Katerina Mrázová, Shiann Darkangelo, Natalie Snodgrass, Aneta Tejralová, Zoe Boyd all had their contracts extended. The Charge also tested the free agent market, inking Alexa Vasko and Rebecca Leslie, who both played with Toronto last season, and goalie Logan Angers, an undrafted free agent who signed a one-year SPA.
Players To Watch
-
Brianne Jenner
Jenner was the Charge’s top scorer in 2024, finishing the season with 20 points (9G, 11A.) The Cornell University alumni will be counted on for her offence again in 2025. At 33 years old, Jenner brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team having represented Canada at the Olympics in both 2014 and 2018.
-
Emerance Maschmeyer
Maschmeyer will have to have a more consistent season for Ottawa in 2025. After logging over 1,300 minutes in 24 starts in 2024, she is a proven netminder who is both durable and consistent but struggled at times in 2024. Newly signed Logan Angers and draft pick Gwyneth Philips will compete for playing time, but the charge will need another big season from Maschmeyer in 2025.
-
Danielle Serdachny
The second-overall pick from Colgate is expected to have and immediate impact, especially offensively, after an impressive collegiate career that saw her score over twenty goals in both her junior and senior years. With 71 points and 61 points in her final two years in the NCAA, respectively, Serdachny can produce points and will play an important role for the Charge in the upcoming season.
Keys to Success
Ottawa will be looking to rebound from a disappointing finish to the 2024 season, having missed the playoffs on the final day of regular-season.
Adding goaltending depth will provide more balance as Head Coach Carla MacLeod leaned heavily on Maschmeyer last season. Defence was a question mark for the Charge in 2024, especially down the stretch Newly drafted players Savolainen and Markowski, along with a healthy Zoe Boyd will help solidify the team’s backend, giving them different options for their three pairings.
Last year’s top line of Jenner, Daryl Watts and Katerina Mrazova might not have been as productive as some of the other top lines in the PWHL, but Ottawa has arguably one of the deepest four lines in the PWHL.
With some key additions through the draft and free agency, MacLeod will have even more depth this season. Rebecca Leslie, who was used sparingly last season in Toronto, will be a player to watch as she has put up huge offensive numbers in the past.
